Our Vision priorities and areas of interest

We want to make our Vision a reality, so there are practical things we are doing to achieve this.

Experimenting and trying new things to reach out to our St John’s and the wider Wellington community remains a key factor. We’re open to suggestions for activities that reflect the principles underlying our vision. These include having multiple contact points, creating safe spaces for different faith and worship expressions, being intergenerational, flexible, and responsive, and creating and keeping intentional connections between activities as we journey together.

Our 8 Priorities

Our 8 priorities continue the growth of our Vision, strengthening clarity, depth, and missional intent. These can be grouped into three areas.

  • Grounded in the Gospel - Gospel clarity, faith and work, authenticity

  • Formed as a distinctive community - cultural engagement, discipleship pathways that are intergenerational

  • Present in our city and culture - neighbourhood engagement, collaboration, public faith

    1. St John’s is guided by The Gospel: What We Believe and Proclaim, committing us to clearly and compellingly share the transforming hope of Jesus Christ, helping people move from curiosity to committed faith.

    2. In Our Cultural Context: Engaging Wellington City, we seek to engage a diverse and spiritually open yet uncertain urban context with a posture that is hospitable, thoughtful, and confident, while affirming and challenging culture through the Gospel.

    3. Through Place: A Church Visibly Present, Understood, and Engaged in the Neighbourhood, we aim to be more visible and attentive to the rhythms of our local community, shaping ministry around real lives.

    4. In Faith and Work: Whole-of-Life Faith, we encourage one another to live out faith in daily work and relationships.

    5. Discipleship: A Distinctive Community that Integrates Newcomers intoMeaningful Pathways of Growth highlights our commitment to forming an intergenerational, relational community where people are welcomed, nurtured, and grown in Christ.

    6. With Tradition and Innovation: Authenticity over Trend, we remain grounded in orthodox faith, valuing authenticity over superficial relevance.

    7. Through Partnership: A Collaborative Mission, we work alongside other churches for the sake of God’s Kingdom.

    8. With Public Faith: Making the Case for Christianity, we engage the mind and heart through thoughtful, accessible conversations about faith.
